Yesterday Sophie and I suited up in our bee burkas and went out to check on the bees, still in their temporary home. We have received half of the new hive in the mail and are awaiting the second package–hopefully today! We are quite excited to be moving them into their permanent home. But we [...]
Fancy had her babies last night, two boys. Sophie has named the blacker one Mike. It was all very exciting, a middle of the night waking. Fancy did great, and kidded with no problems. Unfortunately, however, she seems to have no clue what this whole thing is about. She’s ignoring the kids and barely tolerating [...]
We use recycled building materials every chance we get. For example, here is our chicken house.
It’s quite nice, with outdoor and indoor roosts, an enclosed yard, a sliding door on the house to close them all the way inside when the winter is cold, and a hinged flap that [...]
The hive body is lost in the mail. Gary, who fabulously offered to make it for me, is sending another. So there I was, with 10,000 bees under my bathhouse and NO HIVE to put them in. Here are the bees in their package:
Okay! Time [...]
I have 10,000 bees under my bathhouse, waiting for a home. The hive body is lost in the mail. Can you believe this? That’s 60,000 little legs crossed in hopes that the hive arrives today. I’ll post some pics, when it comes, of hiving bees in a top-bar hive.
We have four Ameraucana chickens, named (by my daughter) Goldie, Whitey, Coco, and Floppy. Goldie, Whitey, and Cocoa were named for their colors, Floppy for her tendency, as a chick, to flop around. Naming is so easy when you are four years old. However, my husband declared that Whitey’s full name is [...]
We take our goats for walks. No, they don’t need to be on a leash. They just walk along with us, eating the shrubbery as we go. I think they see us as part of the herd. I flatter myself to think I’m herd leader. But they do go wherever I go. I have gotten [...]

"Dusi's Wings" April, 2003. . . .
"One thing fantasy can do for us is to give shape to the mysterious in the world; another is to make emotional yearning concrete. The early sections of "Dusi's Wings" do just that...there was a strong grasping towards the spiritual in fantasy here that was very promising, and I look forward to reading more by Lassiter." --review, Tangent Online.twitterage
