Someone set off a Valentine Bomb on our dining table!

We’d clean it up, but we’re too busy eating chocolate hearts. Maybe later.

snow To Do List

Posted on February 13, 2010 - Filed Under adventures, kiddo life | 1 Comment

For god’s sake, we just got another ton of snow! We haven’t had this much snow in a decade. But it has given the kids another chance to check off all the snow related items from their lists. These things are all old hat for you Northerners, I’m sure, but they still retain novelty value [...]

ring around the moon

…means snow is coming soon.

It made me wish I was a heck of a lot better at photography. This was Thursday night, moon 98% full, and these strange lumpy, flat, clouds that Sophie said were the Underworld and Luc said looked like oatmeal. This picture is crap compared to what it looked like but there [...]

Now, I understand that in vast portions of the world, a frozen pond is No Big Deal. But around here, it’s about on par with a solar eclipse or maybe hail falling through a rainbow. (Oh wait, that last one already already happened .) But seriously, our pond has never had even a speck of [...]

Boxes arrive from the grandparents, or from amazon, [...]

Those Weather Men & Women are getting really good at their jobs. They told us it was going to start snowing around noon, and darned if it didn’t start snowing right on schedule, huge, fluffy feather flakes, coming down like gangbusters, just as we were driving home from the toy store at our local mall. [...]

gingerbread bear bonanza

Posted on December 15, 2009 - Filed Under food, kiddo life | 2 Comments

We’re totally infested with gingerbread bears. It’s a nightmare, let me tell you. It all started with some dough.
Best Gingerbread Cookie Dough Ever
Take 3/4 cup butter, softened
and 3/4 cup sugar.
Cream these together.
Add 3/4 cup molasses and
1/4 cup water and mix a bit more. I usually do all this in my food processor.
Next whisk together in [...]

persimmon love

Posted on November 14, 2009 - Filed Under food | 3 Comments

One of the best parts of Fall around here is persimmon season. I’m not talking about those huge Japanese persimmons, but rather the tiny, wild, potent version native to North Carolina.

By the time the persimmons are ready, the persimmon trees have lost all their leaves—the persimmons themselves cling to empty branches, like Christmas ornaments.

Sophie says [...]
