It was a quiet long-weekend around here for us. But I did get my semi-annual mommy-afternoon-off—woo hoo! I decided to go to the movies, all by my own little self. Man, I used to love going to the movies. I’d meet my cousin every Monday and see a matinee of…whateverthefuck, I sure didn’t care. But [...]

leaps and bounds

Sophie, 5, just took a leap in her brain somewhere. You can see it in her drawings, which suddenly, within the space of a week, have developed foreshortening. Look at this one, she calls it Angel Kitten:

It’s so cool when their brains take a jump in ability, in conversational complexity, or getting more complex jokes, [...]

anne nuotio’s awesomeness

Posted on November 20, 2009 - Filed Under reviews, yoga | 8 Comments

I spent this week on-and-off watching Anne Nuotio’s ashtanga yoga dvd. What a revelation!
First off, it’s long. There is a beginners sequence (surys minus chatarunga, standing up to ardha baddha, shortened finishing, no lotus), Primary, Intermediate, and Advanced A, plus a 30 min interview, I dunno, I’m going to say maybe five hours of stuff. [...]

how to hand milk a goat

Posted on November 17, 2009 - Filed Under goats, honeymilk farm | 4 Comments

Okay, you’re sitting at the milking stand, staring at an udder: what next??? I have previously written about how I milk my goats using a small hand-powered milker. I love my milker, I do. But it does break occasionally. If you’re smart, you have two, so you can run and get the spare when you [...]

persimmon love

Posted on November 14, 2009 - Filed Under food | 3 Comments

One of the best parts of Fall around here is persimmon season. I’m not talking about those huge Japanese persimmons, but rather the tiny, wild, potent version native to North Carolina.

By the time the persimmons are ready, the persimmon trees have lost all their leaves—the persimmons themselves cling to empty branches, like Christmas ornaments.

Sophie says [...]

in which the kids and i visit Kid Mecca

Posted on November 10, 2009 - Filed Under adventures, kiddo life | 4 Comments

That’s right, we made the trek into the next city to go here [cue holy music]:

Kid Mecca, otherwise known as Toys R Us, in which the aisles of toys extend into infinity, until they collapse into a toy singularity of impossible density, packaging, and expense.

And in which all these miraculous toys are lit with shoddy [...]

Luc says that the bad thing about wearing a Venom suit is that you can’t put your finger in your belly button.
P.S. I wrote this long post yesterday books and games that make me love them and then betray me, and the cloud ATE IT. I’ve never had that happen before. I just don’t know [...]

1000 words a day

Posted on November 6, 2009 - Filed Under writing | 3 Comments

I hit 35,000 words on my current novel this morning. That’s about 120-140 pages, depending on how the paging is done. In other words, close to half. In Scrivener, each chapter has it’s own little file, so you don’t see the whole number unless you ask for it. I thought I was down in the [...]

the puzzle of death

Posted on November 4, 2009 - Filed Under kiddo life | Leave a Comment

Luc, who just turned four (!!!), loves jigsaw puzzles. This is not a casual fling, but a full on appreciation and commitment to daily puzzling. That’s right, he does several puzzles a day, and then likes to make puzzles of the puzzles by fitting completed puzzles together, filling the entire available floor space with them. [...]
