Ah, Cathy, I knew I could count on you. In fact, when we first saw the alien thing---I mean kousa dogwood fruit---Sophie said, "Mom! Take a picture of this so we can ask Cathy what it is!" So glad you chimed in!

The "alien looking thing" is the fruit of a kousa dogwood. This Asian relative of our native dogwood makes these strawberry blobbie fruits instead of the lovely clusters of carmine berries that our natives produce, and which are devoured -- with great enthusiasm -- by robins, woodpeckers, and squirrels, all quarreling with each other as they toss bits of berry to the ground. I have seen an occasional squirrel taste these fruits, but they usually stop eating after one bite.
