Continuing along. After the beams were up and attached to the foundation, Paul began collecting rocks for the masonry. Here is the beginnings of the rock pile, plus some kid-art, chalk on a board.

More rocks.

The roof was dried in by late summer. Here you can see the first course of stone work going in in the lower right of the picture.

Paul got a lot of inspiration for this from a Do It Yourself network show called “Rock Solid.” The kids were actually somewhat into this show, too. These two guys, cousins, I think, do a masonry project in a half hour, cracking jokes and friendly insults. It’s fun. And you get to watch them do all the heavy lifting while sitting around eating snacks in your pjs. We all got into saying “ROCK SOLID” in an over the top manner, a la Doug and Derrick. I’m sure you can imagine some of the jokes flying around the yurt during this period. Ahem.

Sophie helps to haul rocks.

The front wall got it’s masonry bottom half. Next came a window, made from half a french door, turned on it’s side.

The top half of the walls would be cordwood. Cord wood is like masonry, only you use wood rounds and wedges instead of rocks. Check out Rob Roy‘s books for more info.

Here is a collection of cedar rounds, getting debarked in preparation for being put into the wall.

The completed front wall (minus the door, and the trim).

Around the corner, work begins on the second wall.

For some reason I don’t have any pictures of the making of the back glass bottle wall. Here is a more completed picture, from the outside. The lower half is a mini-shed for garden tools, and the right half is a double door.

That’s all my ‘making of’ photos from the past year. But work continues. This weekend they put in a brick walkway.

Click here for the post on the mostly completed shed. There is always the next thing to build around here!
